VILLAGE REPORT – March 2011
Pythian Sisters – After many years of devoted service to the Village of Salmo, the Pythian Sisters are winding up their organization. They will be a huge loss to the community. We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the many women who have been involved with this organization over the years. We are especially appreciative of their donation of $8,087.62 towards the Fire Department’s purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus.
CBT Dot Night – Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Applications are available at the Village Office. The deadline to have these forms returned to the RDCK is March 7th, 2011 at 4:30 p.m. Dot Night will take place at the Community Centre on March 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Licence Renewals – Both Dog Licences and Business Licences expired on December 31 2010. Impoundment of unlicensed and wandering dogs will be a priority in the coming months. Our Bylaw Enforcement Officer will be dropping in with a timely reminder to any businesses that have not yet renewed their licences.
Building Inspections – The RDCK Building Department have changed their Salmo inspection day to Thursday – effective March 10 2011, from 11:00am to 12:00 Noon. Lee Voykin will be the inspector for the Salmo area. Please call the Village office if you would like to set up an inspection.
Outstanding Taxes and Utilities – The Village is currently owed $77,689 in outstanding utilities, $28,990 in delinquent taxes, and $107,180 taxes in arrears. The total amount outstanding of over $213,859 hinders the Village’s ability to plan capital projects.
Interac – The Village does not accept credit cards or debit cards, due to the extra cost of processing. Cheques, cash and bank transfers will be accepted as always!
CFL Bulbs – Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs can be recycled at both Home Hardware locations in Nelson.
Mayor and Council – Mayor Henderson will be in the office every Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. If you have concerns or suggestions you would like to discuss with her, please call the Village Office at 357-9433 to arrange an appointment. Council meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. at 423 Davies Avenue in the Council Chambers. Upcoming meetings will be on March 8th and 22nd. The Village of Salmo and the RDCK will be meeting at 6:00 on February 22nd to discuss the annual budget for shared services.
Attending A Council Meeting as a Delegation – An application to present to Village Council must be submitted in writing by 4:30 p.m. prior to the meeting. Each delegation is limited to 15 minutes.
WaterSmart Tip – Replace your washers on those leaky faucets...a hot water drip can lose gallons of hot water each week...and push up your energy bill a surprising amount.
SewerSmart Tip – Never flush garbage of any kind down the toilet. Grease, diapers, floss, and plastic tampon holders can create problems at the sewage treatment plant.
